(Core Knowledge Language Arts)

Strong Skills Foundation: 

Amplify CKLA features an explicit, systematic approach.  It builds a solid foundation of phonological awareness and phonics.

Deep Content Knowledge:

Research shows that reading comprehension increases when students have background knowledge about a topic.  CKLA is designed around topics that interest kids, from science to world history to great literature and art.  Students build connections across domains and grades, deepening their understanding and engagement with each year.

Students will learn many new math skills with GO Math:

  1. Addition and Subtraction within 1,000

  2.  Represent and Inter

  3.  Understand Multiplication

  4. Multiplication Facts and Strategies

  5. Use Multiplication Facts

  6. Understand Division

  7. Division Facts and Strategies 

  8. Understand Fractions

  9. Compare Fractions

  10. Time, Length, Liquid Volume, and Mass

  11. Perimeter and Area

  12.  Geometry

*We may teach these out of order to better support our learning.

 

 

Grammar instruction -- the study of the way words are used to make sentences.  

Writing -- Not So Wimpy Teacher.  Students will engage in daily mini lessons for each genre of writing and produce at least one formal paper per genre.

  • Narrative

  • Persuasive

 

Writing with CKLA - students will engage with the reading topic in various writing activities. 

Spelling -- Weekly spelling work will follow the Reading Horizons phonics rule for the week.  

Handwriting -- Handwriting Without Tears.  Students will learn and practice cursive handwriting as time allows.  Handwriting is not a graded lesson.  

Mystery Science

Mystery Science is designed for the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  We cover key expectations for 3rd grade science.

  • Animals Through Time - This unit will cover the topics of  fossils, habitats, environments, adaptations, heredity, variation, traits, and groups.

  • Power of Flowers - This unit will cover flower reproduction, fruiting, inheritance, traits, and selection.

  • Invisible Forces - This unit covers forces, balance of forces, friction, magnets, and engineering.  

  • Stormy Skies - This unit will cover the water cycle, phases of matter, weather patterns, climate, and natural disasters.
